BMO’s Mixtape: A Playful, Dreamy Detour Through the Musical World of Adventure Time: Distant Lands
After the series ended, Adventure Time had several spin-offs. For example, the first one, Adventure Time: Distant Lands, premiered on June 25, 2020, on HBO Max as a four-episode TV movie miniseries. During its run, the series released a new episode every six months and spawned two soundtrack albums.
Released by WaterTower Music on September 18, 2020, BMO’s Mixtape was the first of these albums, arriving as a surprising and delightful companion piece to the series. However, it didn’t feature any music from the “BMO” episode, even though it was related. Instead, it offered eleven remixes from the original show’s soundtrack, along with the song “Eternity with You” from the “Obsidian” episode.
A Set of Adventure Time Remixes from DJ Gilligan Moss
Let me repeat that. BMO’s Mixtape wasn’t a traditional score album. It was a music remix album produced by professional club DJ Gilligan Moss, drawing from the wider Adventure Time musical universe. As a result, it’s a genuine, curated mood piece that features a laid-back, electronic, breezy, synth-friendly filtering of the franchise’s best-loved songs.
For soundtrack fans, that makes it especially interesting. That’s because it’s both a nostalgia object and a reinterpretation, one that captures the emotional elasticity that made Adventure Time music so memorable.
Why Adventure Time BMO’s Mixtape Stands Out
One of the most appealing things about BMO’s Mixtape is that it understands the flexible role music played in Adventure Time. That is, from the very beginning, the songs in the series were never mere comic interludes. Instead, they carried character, memory, longing, absurdity, and comfort—sometimes all at once.
Gilligan Moss approached that material with affection rather than reinventing it for its own sake. Because of this, these remixes simply smoothed out the rough edges of the original performances, turning them into a warm, summery flow.
As a result, BMO’s Mixtape feels cohesive even though the source songs came from different corners of the franchise. That cohesion matters because many soundtrack-adjacent remix albums often feel like disconnected bonus material. Luckily, this one avoided that pitfall, opting to be its own complete listening experience instead.
