Hey Arnold Volume 1 Released Digitally for Series’ 30th Anniversary

Television soundtracks are the heart and soul of their respective animated series. However, only a few of them are memorable on their own. These albums transcend being mere background, becoming integral parts of the overall experience.

The “Hey Arnold!” soundtrack was one of them, of course. But it never got the release it deserved when it first aired 30 years ago.

However, that changed back in 2020 when Enjoy the Ride Records released the first season’s soundtrack on vinyl. Unfortunately, that release was a limited run, which has long since ended. Sure, you may still find the LP in stores. But they’re mostly sold out by now. So, once again, fans had to wait.

But they didn’t need to wait long. That’s because Republic Records released the album, titled “Hey Arnold! The Music Volume 1”, digitally on October 7, 2026. So, you can now get all 39 tracks in a single playlist from your favorite digital music service.

About Hey Arnold Volume 1

“Hey Arnold! Volume 1” is, of course, a compilation album that compiles the entire original score Jim Lang created for the first half of the show.

As a result, it introduces us to the show’s soundscape. The series, of course, tracked the misadventures of Arnold, a football-headed fourth grader who lives in a boarding house full of eccentric tenants. And it did that through its rare mix of jazz, hip-hop, funk, Latin rhythms, and orchestral cues,

The soundtrack is still beloved by fans to this day. Bree Bowles, the SVP of Republic Records’ Kids & Family division, reiterated this by saying:

“I genuinely wish I could tell my childhood self that one day I would get to help release the music from Hey Arnold. I used to race home from school every day to watch the show. It was my absolute favorite growing up, and the music is such a huge part of what made it special. Jim created a sound that was completely its own and, 30 years later, it still immediately takes you back to that world.”

Moreover, the series ran for five seasons, offering stories about friendship and family. Volume 1 generally covers the first 2.

My Review of Hey Arnold! Volume 1

Now that said, I have a confession to make. I have never seen “Hey Arnold!”. Sure, I’ve seen the memes and clips, but not much else. So, I need this soundtrack to sell the show to me.

In other words, I need this “Hey Arnold! Volume 1” album to stand on its own musically. But I also need it to show me what I’m missing through its playful balance between:

  • Atmosphere – evoke the bustle and personality of Arnold’s city.
  • Emotional contrast: seamless transitions between comedy, mystery, adventure, and heartfelt cues.
  • Character perspective: clearly defined motifs of the show’s cast.
  • Animation craftsmanship: music that hints at the timing, movement, expressions, and visual gags on screen.

Now, it’s certainly a unique sound. Musically, you can definitely hear the jazz and blues influences throughout the soundtrack. Additionally, the soundtrack works well as a standalone instrumental jazz album. And because of that, it mostly works.

The jazzy themes also give the soundtrack an early 1900s vibe. That’s strange considering its target demographic, but it’s a welcome deviation, nonetheless.

However, I don’t think the album works all that well as a soundtrack. That’s because, except for the theme song, there’s nothing that ties the music to the show. It’s good jazz, and I would recommend it to anyone who loves that genre. But there’s nothing here that invites you to stream “Hey Arnold!”.

It may still have some value to fans, though. However, it’s hard to judge such things without proper context.

Final Thoughts

Overall, “Hey Arnold! Volume 1” is a great jazz album that would fit in any situation. And it’s a joy to listen to as a result. It’s not without its flaws, though. And those flaws prevent me from recommending it to all but “Hey Arnold!” fans and jazz enthusiasts.

However, that’s just my take. But what’s yours? Post your thoughts in the comments below.
