Back Lot Music Released the Super Mario Bros Movie Soundtrack Digitally and Physically
Three years ago, Nintendo and Illumination basically gave us what we’ve always wanted for the past 40 years. But you can’t make a truly faithful, animated masterpiece of a movie adaptation without also giving us an equally epic soundtrack.
So, they also partnered with Back Lot Music to release the Super Mario Bros. Movie Soundtrack on April 7, 2023. This 37-track album featured the film’s entire original score composed by Brian Tyler, of course. But it also included a few of Koji Kondo’s original Nintendo themes.
However, the album isn’t just scores. It also includes Jack Black’s “Peaches”, which he sings as Bowser. Then, there’s Ali Dee’s version of the “Mario Brothers Rap”. In other words, it’s an hour of music every gamer wants to hear.
Luckily, you can still find the album on most digital music services. So, you can get it from your favorite app. Otherwise, you can use one of my links below.
iam8bit Released Super Mario Bros Movie Soundtrack Physically
However, they didn’t stop there. They also partnered with iam8bit to give us physical versions of the soundtrack. In other words, you can get the Super Mario Bros. Soundtrack on either CD or vinyl. There are also several vinyl variants, though selection will vary.
Unfortunately, iam8bit claims the vinyl releases are sold out, and thus likely out of print. However, you can still find them in most vinyl record stores, though. Either way, you shouldn’t have issues finding the CDs, since they’re still readily available.
There were reports that iam8bit was also releasing the soundtrack on cassette. But I couldn’t collaborate with any of them. No stores sell the album on cassette, nor does iam8bit list it on their website. So, if a cassette release was planned, it’s likely no longer happening. At least, we can still get the music in other formats.
A Quick Review of the Super Mario Bros Movie Soundtrack
Since it features music from both Brian Tyler and Koji Kondo, I expected the Super Mario Bros Movie Soundtrack to be big, bold, and symphonic. The reviews seem to indicate that, too. But is it?
Musically, the score does, in fact, match the hype. And I’m also glad they released it all. It’s indeed very bold and epic, and you can definitely hear the game sounds strung throughout it. The album release also lets you hear every note without the movie’s dialogue getting in the way. I say it’s generally on par with modern Mario game music.
Now that is a good thing since it lets the soundtrack stand out with an identity of its own. As a result, you can listen to it as either a movie soundtrack or a standalone piece. You’d still enjoy it as Mario music just the same. Not bad for Tyler’s animated movie soundtrack debut.
As for “Peaches”, it’s Jack Black. What more can I say? It’s a nice song that’s basically perfect for what it is.
The same goes for this rendition of the “Mario Brothers Rap”. It’s a decent take on the old 80s classic. In fact, it almost sounds like it was ripped straight from the old Super Mario Bros. Show.
About the Super Mario Bros Movie
As I have noted above, the Super Mario Bros. Movie is an animated adaptation of Nintendo’s flagship game franchise. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic directed the tale about a pair of Brooklyn plumbers who get sucked down a pipe into the Mushroom Kingdom.

Overall, the Super Mario Bros. Movie Soundtrack is a great album to listen to whenever you’re a Mario newbie or a long-time veteran. And it’s tracks like these that make me hopeful for future Mario movies, Galaxy included.
