To celebrate Independence Day, VIZ Media announced at their Anime Expo 2026 panel that they had greenlit the production of RWBY Volume 10. The announcement came three years after the release of the show’s previous season.

VIZ Media Greenlights RWBY Volume 10 After a Three-Year Hiatus
On July 4, 2026, during their Anime Expo panel, VIZ Media announced that they had greenlit RWBY Volume 10 and that production was underway. This announcement came in the form of a video of the four lead actresses opening a box to reveal Kerry Shawcross, the show’s showrunner, who delivered the message.
The much-anticipated announcement came one year after Shawcross said the new season was in “early writing and planning” at last year’s Anime Expo. It’s also been two years since VIZ acquired RWBY from the now-defunct Rooster Teeth Productions.
However, the current announcement didn’t reveal much about the production of Volume 10. All we got from it was that the volume was greenlit and nothing else. Sure, it confirmed the lead actresses were returning, but we already knew that from VIZ’s previous social media posts.
Still, it’s good to know that they are formally working on the volume now. That’s because we should get more info on it much more often now, beyond the quick annual updates we’ve been getting.
What is RWBY
Since it’s been three years since the last installment, let me give you a refresher on RWBY.
Created by the late Monty Oum, RWBY is an animated science-fantasy web series set on the alien world of Remnant. It follows the adventures of four young women (Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang) collectively known as Team RWBY. Along the way, the girls train to fight the Creatures of Grimm, a demonic force on their planet.
There are currently nine seasons (or volumes) of RWBY available on Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Apple TV, among others. You can also watch the show on Blu-ray if you like. Beyond the main series, there are several novels, video games, comics, manga, and the anime RWBY: Ice Queendom. Then, there are the two movie crossovers with the Justice League.
Rooster Teeth produced the show from its premiere in 2013 until the company closed in 2024. Since then, it’s been picked up by VIZ Media, which has led us to where we are now.
What Do We Know About RWBY Volume 10 So Far
So, now you know why the new RWBY Volume 10 update is big news. The show’s been on hiatus for years. That led many fans to believe the show was canceled, leaving it unfinished. Fortunately, those rumors are dead, but what do we actually know about the new season of RWBY?
Short answer: not much.
As I noted above, the announcement didn’t reveal anything beyond the fact that the volume was formally greenlit for production. So, we must dive into the revelations that led to it to learn more.
For instance, we know that all four writers are returning. In other words, Shawcross, Miles Luna, Eddy Rivas, and Kiersi Burkhart are back in the writer’s room, with Rivas serving as lead writer. We can also reasonably presume the lead actresses are back, since they’re in the announcement video.
Everything else is speculation at this point. We don’t even know which animation studio is animating the volume, regardless of what some news outlets are saying.
Wasn’t RWBY Volume 10 Announced Last Year?
While the new update didn’t say much, it’s a far cry from what we got last year.
Last year, VIZ said they were “early writing and planning”. In other words, RWBY Volume 10 was in pre-production, the step before getting greenlit. Now that it’s in formal production, we should be getting a lot more updates about it in the near future.
Final Thoughts
I’ve been watching RWBY since 2015, consuming everything I could get my hands on. So, Volume 10 being greenlit is good news for me, regardless of how long it takes VIZ to make it. All because we now know that the current hiatus is finite.
