I’m a content creator. However, content creation wasn’t the buzzword it is today when I started my brand. Back then, things were simple and isolated, with Internet streaming and social media in their infancy.

On the surface, content creation is just crafting ideas into various media formats, but it also has a deeper meaning and purpose. Due to this, it plays a crucial role in marketing and communication.

Today, it drives engagement, powers websites and apps, shapes society, and establishes trends. Please keep reading to learn how it helps people understand brands, products, services, and industries.

Why You Need Content Creation

Content creation wasn’t really a thing when I started Toon Radio around the turn of the century. Sure, people released content online, but it was seen as a poor excuse for journalism. You only used social media to keep in touch with friends and family. Multimedia streaming existed, but its scope and reach were limited.

Now, content creation has become the cornerstone for any online presence, whether it be for businesses, organizations, or personalities. It even expanded beyond the Net in some cases, delving into every aspect of our lives.

What is Content Creation?

Content Writing

Content creation is planning, developing, and publishing topical content with a purpose. Its goal is to present a target audience with valuable, engaging, and compelling content marketing and branding.

As such, it takes a sharp mind and stamina to do it correctly, providing high-quality and fresh insights and storytelling. Generative AI can do some of it, but it takes human wisdom to place the right content to engage and turn audiences into customers.

The Importance of Content Creation

Content is everywhere. Content is how we interact with the world, especially online. It’s how you introduce people to your brand and keep them as customers. Without content, you have no business. You need effective content and its power to drive people through your marketing funnel, regardless of what you do.

The Content Creation Process

This website is just a blog, but I have plans to add a video podcast to it. It would be a lot of extra work. However, I can rest assured that the creation process would be mostly the same because it’s the same for every channel. They all require these four steps:

  • Choosing the right topics
  • Selecting the content type and format
  • Choosing a content creator for each task
  • Outline, create, and publish the content

Choosing the Right Topics

You create content to make content, but you need content to make. Therefore, you must find topics and ideas that will work with your target audience. The key is to use issues that reflect the needs of each channel, as well as your overall message and image.

As such, you must follow these steps for everything you create:

  • Brainstorm and write down topics your audience might find valuable
  • Use keyword research to expand those ideas
  • Check your competition for popular topics
  • Survey your competitors’ and your customers or viewers

Selecting Your Content Type and Format

Once you have your topic, you must decide how you will present it to the world. Different topics work best with varying types of content and formats, and these types have specific target audiences.

Content Type

All content falls under one of the following categories, regardless of platform, topic, or audience.

  1. Text – blog posts, social media posts, articles, books, website copy, email, etc.
  2. Audio – podcasts, audiobooks, voiceovers, etc.
  3. Video – social media clips, video podcasts, etc.
  4. Graphics – Infographics, charts, social media images, etc.

Content Format

Your content will be delivered in various formats, depending on the channel and your objectives. These content formats include:

  • How-to guides and tutorials
  • Wiki, help article, or guide
  • Listicle (list article)
  • Opinionated Editorial or review
  • News or updates
  • Brand story or case study
  • Website content, such as a product or landing page
  • Interactive tool
  • Audio or video podcast

Content Channels and Platforms

Your content channel has a significant impact on the types and formats you can use. Each channel has a specific target audience, although some audiences may overlap across multiple channels. As such, your content creation process must include selecting the right channel as well.

Popular channels include:

  • Blogs and Websites
  • Books, magazines, and e-books
  • Social media
  • Audio or podcast platforms (Spotify, etc.)
  • Video platforms (YouTube, Vimeo)
  • Email, brochures, letters, and posters

Determining Your Content Creator

It would be great if we could do everything ourselves, but we can’t. No matter who we are or what we do, we need others to help us. This is true for life as well as when we’re creating content, either because we don’t have the skills, resources, or time.

Luckily, you have a few content creator choices at your disposal:

  1. In-house writers and artists – complete control over the process, but it comes with extra overhead and cost
  2. Internal subject matter experts (SMEs) – high-quality content, but it prevents your SMEs from doing their primary functions. You may also need to train them to write.
  3. Generative AI tools – the fastest and least expensive option, but AI can lead to low-quality and irrelevant content
  4. External consultants or specialist contributors – high-quality content with competitive results and overhead

Most businesses and organizations will see the best results when they outsource their content to freelance creators. These specialists offer the same SME quality without the extra overhead and training that comes from onboarding employees.

Outline, Create, and Publish Your Content

You must finish all the planning before you start creating thing, but the process is straightforward from there. It all comes down to the same three steps:

  • Outline the content – outlining is not strictly necessary in all cases, but it will save time and effort later
  • Create the content – Write the content, then record it if necessary. The exact process will depend on the type of content.
  • Publish the content– Format and finalize the content, and then post it to its channel.

Content Development is Not Content Creation

One of the hardest things I had to learn when I established this blog was the difference between content creation and development. While related, they have vastly different procedures and scopes.

Content development includes content creation, but it’s much more than that. Effectively, it is another word for content marketing. As such, it also involves planning, distributing, and reviewing content tailored to a specific audience or purpose, serving as the bedrock of your entire business operation.

Professional Quality Content Creation Comes from Experience

Everything you do requires creating content for one purpose or another. It’s a tedious process with multiple steps, but it’s easy to understand. However, writing high-quality copy only comes from experience.
