UglyDolls Score Brings Christopher Lennertz Music to Theaters

UglyDolls

Christopher Lennertz signed on with STX Entertainment to write the music for their upcoming animated features UglyDolls. Lennertz (Lost in Space, Horrible Bosses, Ride Along) will also help write a few of the original insert songs for the film.

Lennertz Continues His Animation Legacy with UglyDolls

Known for writing for comedies, Lennertz is no stranger to animated films. His first major animated feature was “Buzz Lightyear of Star Command” from 2000. Since then, he has created music for at least one animated film or series every year, including 2016’s Sausage Party and 2017’s “Surfs: The Lost Village“, which he also collaborated with Kelly Asbury.

For UglyDolls, Lennerts will write some of the film’s songs along with the music. He co-writing many pieces with Glenn Slater (Tangled, Galavant), who also worked with Lennertz on Sausage Party.

UglyDolls From Toys to Film

UglyDolls follows a group of the dolls as they confront the meaning of being different and the struggles of wanting to be loved. It is based on the lore surrounding the UglyDolls plush toy line created by David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim. Kelly Asbury (Shrek 2, Gnomeo & Juliet, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron) is directing it with the voices of rapper Pitbull, and singer Kelly Clarkson who will voice Moxy with both of them providing songs for the film as well. Robert Rodriguez (From Dusk till Dawn, Sin City, Spy Kids) will produce the project for STX Entertainment. STX plans to release the film to theaters and Hulu on May 10, 2019, along with a 26-episode television series for Hulu that will complement the film. You can learn more at the official movie website.

I will post more information on the film and Hulu series as the information comes available. If you are a fan of Lennertz and his music, post your opinions in the comments below. You can also tell us if you plan to watch the UglyDolls film and series and if you own some of the dolls. Until next time, you can read the other news I offer on this website.

Spies in Disguise with Theodore Shapiro Music Coming Next Year

Spies in Disguise

20th Century Fox hired Theodore Shapiro to write the score for their upcoming animated comedy Spies in Disguise. While not his first animated film score, the film will be Shapiro’s first major one.

Theodore Shapiro To Write Spies in Disguise Music

Theodore Shapire is joining the crew headed by directors Nick Bruno and Troy Quane. “Spies in Disguise” will also feature Michael J. Travers as producer with the voices of Will Smith and Tom Holland.

The film expands the story presented in the 2009 short “Pigeon: Impossible” and follows a secret agent who triggers a global conflict with a pigeon stuck in a nuclear, government-issued briefcase. 20th Century Fox plans to have the Blue Sky Studios production in theaters on April 19, 2019.

As mentioned before, “Spies in Disguise” is not the first film to feature music from Theodore Shapiro. He also wrote the music for the 2012 British stop motion film “The Pirates! Bad of Misfits” and 2017’s “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie“. However, Shapiro is more known for is live action films such as “Zoolander 2“, “Not Another Teen Movie“, and “Dodgeball“.

A Blue Sky Film That is Not Ice Age

Spies in Disguise” will also be Blue Sky’s thirteen animated film. It is also their follow up for their 2017 production “Ferdinand“, though you may know the studio for their Ice Age film series. I am not sure why they went with Shapiro and no their old main stay composer John Powel. The movie might work for Blue Sky in the end, but it is unusual for studios to do that. Only time will tell if Powel fans have something fear. Until then, Blue Sky fans can enjoy the music of Shapiro once “Spies in Disguise” hits theaters next year.

If you are a fan of Theodore Shapiro’s work, post your favorite Shapiro piece in the comments below. Otherwise, you can read the other animation music news on this website.
