Soul from Pixar Brings Top Artists for Jazz Soundtrack
Soul is the next film from Pixar, and its soundtrack will feature an all-star cast of performers. Coming from all corners of music, these artists will provide the sound for the jazz-inspired film.
Trent Reznor Helm’s Pixar’s Soul Soundtrack
Pixar Animation brought in some big names in music for their next feature film. These musicians include Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails, who will write the score. Coming off a recent collaboration with Cory Wrong, late-night bandleader Jon Batiste will pen some original music for the film as well.
Neither Reznor nor Ross is new to the film music scene. The two men contributed music to film such as Netflix’s 2018 hit Birdbox, and Jonah Hill’s directorial debut, Mid90s, about Los Angeles skateboarders. They also worked together on 2014’s Social Network, which won a Grammy for “Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media”, and 2011’s The Girl with The Dragon Tatoo.
Soul Music Theater
Just announced at this year’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, California, Soul features the voices of Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Daveed Diggs, Questlove, and Phylicia Rashad. It follows a middle school music teacher (Foxx) who dreams of making it big and playing at New York City’s iconic jazz club, The Blue Note. He finds his way there after taking a wrong step into an open sewer grate, reverting into his soul form in the cosmic realm. It is scheduled for a June 19, 2020 premiere.
Pixar hired Dana Murray as Soul’s producer and Pete Docter as its director. Both have long histories working with Pixar. Murray was Oscar-nominated for the short Lou, while Docter received Academy awards for Up and Inside Out. Docter is also Pixar’s chief creative officer following John Lasseter’s departure.
Pixar makes great films, and I do not see Soul being any different. It has an interesting plot. I like the Jazz theme, and the score has some big names behind it. I see Soul becoming a go-to film for music lovers. June 2020 is too far in the future to decide on seeing a film though. I may need a trailer to decide to see the film in theaters. Still, I might catch as showing if one comes available.
If you like jazz and planning to see the film, discuss it in the comments below. Otherwise, check out the other music news I have on this blog.
